How to cap LLM API spend
A real cap stops the call before it is made, per tenant, instead of alerting after the bill. What each major provider and gateway documents, quoted from their own docs (read 31 October 2026), and what Avenbridge enforces.
What developers report
“I just got hit with a $4,200 OpenAI bill because an agent I deployed for customer support got stuck in a recursive loop with my CRM tool call.” / “LangSmith showed the logs after the damage was done, but nothing actually stopped the bleeding in real-time.” (https://www.reddit.com/r/SaaS/comments/1sel0ju/i_almost_went_broke_because_of_an_ai_infinite_loop/)
“Project-level limits are too coarse once you have concurrent agents — one hitting a retry storm exhausts the shared budget while everything else waits.” (https://www.reddit.com/r/OpenAI/comments/1schfyh/peruser_and_pertenant_budget_limits_for_openai/)
Alerts are not caps
The first thing to check in any provider is whether a limit only notifies you or actually stops requests. Several controls below do one, the other, or both depending on a setting. This page lists only what each vendor documents; check the linked page before relying on it, because these controls change.
OpenAI: organization and project spend limits
Source: https://help.openai.com/en/articles/9186755-managing-your-work-in-the-api-platform-with-projects
Monthly spend limits exist at both the organization and the project level. A limit can monitor spending without stopping requests; turning on “Enforce a hard limit” makes API requests fail after tracked spending reaches the limit. OpenAI notes enforcement is not instantaneous, so recorded spending can slightly exceed the limit. Spend alerts notify at thresholds and do not stop requests.
Anthropic: tier caps, your own limit, workspace limits
Source: https://docs.anthropic.com/en/api/rate-limits
Each usage tier has a monthly spend cap (the docs list Start $500, Build $1,000, Scale $200,000; Custom has none). At the tier cap, usage pauses until 00:00 UTC on the first of next month and requests return HTTP 429 with error_code enforced_spend_limit_reached and no retry-after header.
You can set your own lower limit on the Console Billing page; when reached, requests return HTTP 400 invalid_request_error. Per-workspace spend limits can also be set, except on the default workspace.
OpenRouter: per-key credit limits
Source: https://openrouter.ai/docs/features/provisioning-api-keys
With a Management API key you can create API keys with an optional credit limit, optionally reset daily, weekly or monthly (limit_reset), choose whether BYOK usage counts toward it, and disable a key. Workspace budgets can be set through /api/v1/workspaces/{workspace_ref}/budgets/{interval}.
LiteLLM (self-hosted gateway): budgets per key, user, team, customer
Source: https://docs.litellm.ai/docs/proxy/users
max_budget with budget_duration can be set globally, per team, per team member, per internal user, per virtual key, per model, and per end customer; a key can carry several windows (for example $10 per day and $100 per 30 days). Requests over budget fail with a budget_exceeded error. LiteLLM states that budgets need a database: without one, the global max_budget fails open. Budget reservation is on by default so concurrent requests are counted before they run, and fail_closed_budget_enforcement makes the database authoritative when Redis is degraded.
A practical checklist
Use a hard limit, not only an alert. Put each app, environment or customer behind its own project, workspace or key so one runaway loop cannot spend the others’ budget. Prefer short windows (daily) on top of a monthly ceiling for agents and loops. Handle the provider’s limit error explicitly: Anthropic’s spend-cap 429 has no retry-after, so automatic retries only fail again. Expect small overshoot where enforcement is asynchronous.
How the Avenbridge cap works
Avenbridge is a hosted knowledge MCP, not a general model API, so this is the cap on what a business pays for the AI work Avenbridge does for it. Price: $10 per million tokens, the first 10 million at $8 per million, billed monthly in USD.
The cap is per business (per tenant). Every business has a monthly cap, $300 by default, which you can lower at any time. Before each model call Avenbridge compares the month’s charges with the cap; at or above it the call is not made and the work goes to a person on the team instead, until the next month. At 80% the owner gets one email. A call already running when the cap is crossed finishes, so the last call can take spend slightly past the cap, and usage past the cap is not charged.
Businesses can also set an extra daily or monthly model-cost limit and turn the model off entirely, both checked before every call, and each shared document pack link has its own asks-per-day and tokens-per-day limit.
What it does not do: there is no separate cap per end user inside a business. End users ask from their own AI, which uses no Avenbridge tokens. Raising the cap takes effect only after the account owner confirms it from an email to their work address.
